Turkana hit by teacher shortage - MP

THE government has been urged to hasten recruitment of teachers . Turkana county women's representative Joyce Emanikor said schools in the region are under-staffed. "The situation in the county needs immediate measures to address the enormous shortfall," she said. Emanikor said reports indicate that the state of education in the county is pathetic and displays deprivation of basic human rights for children. She said the county also lacks schools and learning faciliies. “Education is an inherent human right and a basic standard without which, people cannot live in dignity. Kenya’s education policy framework stipulates that education and literacy are essential prerequisites for socio-economic development of this country,” Emanikor said yesterday at Parliament Buildings on Friday. With a total enrollment of 130,380 pupils, the county has 352 primary schools and 1,431 teachers, representing a shortfall of 2,298 or 161 per cent. “In extreme cases, some classes in Turkana have over 150 pupils making teaching impossible. Loima sub-county, which was recently highlighted in the media, has 55 primary schools with only 179 teachers, doubling up headship and teaching,” she said.
